Lamping

Recommended Posts

After a disapointing morning shooting yesterday, my [bANNED TEXT] phoned me to see if i fancied an hour out with the lamp.

He wanted to take his 8mth old bull x bitch as she hadnt seen anything yet. It had forcast a wet and windy night but i new there was quite a full moon so it was a bit of a chance.

I left at 9.15 and headed to a place where we had mixed results lately, but as it was to show his bitch with my 14mth beddy x we give it a shot. we got there and there was a slight breeze but the fields were waterlogged, so it was to be quite dissapointing, just 3 runs and only 1 rabbit accounted for. and the hevens opened up and we got soaked :(

So we decided to go for a mooch, after checking several fields to no avail, i turned to a new area i hadnt been before. we parked by an open field and i jumped out to check. I walked in about 30yrds and switched on the lamp, halfa dozen rabbits and two sets of eyes on the bottom hedge. I moved over to the side hedge turned to the van and flashed at it and started to squeak. When i do this my other [bANNED TEXT] gets the dogs out and follows me into the field, but this [bANNED TEXT] is new to this and didnt realise what i wanted  One set of eyes beelined towards me i thought wheres he with the dog, I now that the dog is only 14mths but this field was huge and would have given him a good course but in the back of my mind i didnt want him to connect yet.

Well anyway the moon broke through, the eyes saw me, and my [bANNED TEXT] was still sat in the van

So i walked back and told him the score. Got the dogs out and had a go at some rabbits. The fields were big and the moon out we walked halfway down the field and spotted some about 10 yrds off the hedge and 150yds in front of us, my beddy is not the best spotter but runs the beam well, i thought i couldnt get any closer so i slipped him he ran well and my lamp was struggleing with the distance, but he turned and turned, once, twice, five, six times i thought this rabbit was on drugs then it jinked 90 degree and headed up the field towards us, closer and closer with no sign of my dog, but one thing u can rely on with a 27" beddy x grey is that if u cant see him u will hear him tearing up the turf. The rabbit got closer and closer, it passed and 10 yards past me my dog powered thru and took it, The course must have lasted a good minute and i was chuffed. My [bANNED TEXT] said shite thats a big rabbit. I just giggled to myself :haha: But he soon found out as i made him carry it another 3 big fields.

Ran another 2 and the dog did well but was beaten by the gates, but in the future we will know where to stand. Then the heavens opened up and we got drenched again, but this time without coats as we left them in the van :icon_redface: and we were lost, :icon_redface: these fields realy were huge.

But the night turned out a good un a first for my dog. and a nice learning night for my m8s pup.

Good stuff mate!

Its not all about massive bags, its getting out there and seeing the dogs work that really counts.

Quite right [bANNED TEXT] even some of the poor nights can leave you with some of the best courses, As above not much about but still had 6 - 8 cracking courses. I dont tend to get the enjoyment out of quick takes, just rabbits

Although i do like to see my whipet collie x taking squatters.
